Soda cans in the U.S. and many other countries often don’t show a clear “expiration date.” Instead, they use production codes or Julian date codes that you can decode to figure out when the soda was made. Here’s how to read them:

Julian Date Code

• It’s usually YYDDD:

• YY = last two digits of the year.

• DDD = day of the year (001 = Jan 1, 365 = Dec 31).

• Example: 23120

• “23” = 2023

• “120” = 120th day of year = April 30, 2023.

MMDD or MMDDYY

• Some brands use standard month/day/year or month/day.

• Example: 051524 = May 15, 2024.

Letters for Months

• Some codes use letters A–L for months (A = Jan, B = Feb … L = Dec).

• Example: A1524 = January 15, 2024

Soda doesn’t “expire” in a dangerous way, but it does lose carbonation and flavor. Cans: best within 9 months from production. Plastic bottles: best within 3–6 months.
